Why camp software hides its prices — and why ours are on the page

Go price camp management software this afternoon and here is what you'll find: the category leader's pricing page explains that pricing is "based on factors unique to your camp" and introduces you to an Account Executive. Another incumbent's pricing page doesn't exist — the URL returns a 404. The enterprise player's fees are set per account, by an account manager, under two different fee models. Even the platform whose comparison pages attack competitors for opaque pricing now gates its own numbers behind a "Get Pricing" form.

Of the seven platforms we studied while building Bunkhouse, five publish no usable price at all.

Hidden pricing is a strategy, not an oversight

A price you can only learn on a sales call is a price that can be different for you than for the camp across the lake. Per-camper frameworks mean the quote scales with your success. Negotiated rates mean the renewal conversation starts from whatever you agreed when you were new. And when prices are quoted, not published, comparing vendors takes a month of demos instead of an afternoon of reading.

For a seasonal business run by three people in a camp office, that month is the month you don't have.

What the fees look like once you're inside

Published or not, the category's fee structures share a shape: a platform fee, plus per-person charges, plus usage meters, plus services. Per-registrant overage fees. Metered text messages and per-recipient email overages. A surcharge for using a payment processor the vendor didn't pick. Four-figure data-import setup fees, plus an hourly rate. One platform charges families a non-refundable booking fee at the camp's own checkout — money that comes out of the camp's goodwill and goes to the software vendor.

None of these numbers are on the marketing pages. All of them are in fee schedules, help centers, and service agreements — we cite each one on our comparison pages.

What we do instead

Bunkhouse's pricing is on the pricing page: $99 a month for Starter, $249 for Pro, flat. Unlimited campers, unlimited staff users, unlimited email, on both tiers. Payments run through your own Stripe account — you are the merchant of record, funds settle to you — and our cut is a published 1% platform fee. There are no parent-side fees, no per-camper charges, and no import invoice: the importer is a product feature that shows you a dry run and reconciles to the cent.

If our pricing ever needs a footnote, we'll consider that a bug in the pricing, not the footnote.
